Bipolar Disorder Counseling

Achieve stability through bipolar disorder therapy

The ups and downs have made living your life too difficult. You want to feel like yourself again and not feel ruled by bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder has affected nearly every aspect of your life. Your mood has shifted from profound depression to intense focus or dangerous and risky behavior. Maybe you feel good, but you know things will eventually change and the sadness will return.

Now could be the time to take care of yourself and get bipolar disorder treatment.

Bipolar Disorder Counseling in Pocatello Idaho

Therapy with me as a bipolar disorder counselor can help you find stability within your bipolar symptoms.

The bipolar transitions in mood from up to down has worn you out. Maybe family or loved ones have distanced themselves from you as a result of your bipolar symptoms. You are ready for stability but just can't quite make it happen on your own. Bipolar disorder doesn't have to get in the way.

Bipolar disorder treatment is a necessity if you are going to regain control of your moods and reduce bipolar symptoms. Counseling for bipolar disorder is an opportunity to work with a bipolar disorder therapist and learn skills to cope with changing moods.

When people experiencing bipolar disorder come to my office, they commonly express a desire to feel "normal." I often understand this to mean they want their bipolar symptoms to level out, and for their moods to be stable. Counseling for bipolar disorder with me as a bipolar disorder therapist can help make that "normal" a reality.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

Recognizing the symptoms of bipolar disorder is the first step to managing your moods.

Bipolar disorder symptoms

As a bipolar disorder counselor, I have seen how bipolar disorder can affect people in different ways. However, bipolar disorder is characterized by a significant change in mood over time from a "manic episode" to a "depressive episode." As I have provided bipolar disorder treatment there are some common symptoms of bipolar disorder that fit into these episodes. Here are some of the common bipolar disorder symptoms I have seen in bipolar disorder counseling.

Manic Episode

  • Increased energy. Typically lasts for at least a week but can be experienced longer.

  • Need less sleep. Coupled with increased energy, insomnia in bipolar disorder can last for days.

  • Change in focus. Often I have seen it as a goal driven hyperfocus on some thing like work or hobbies. It can be purposeless focus. Or the opposite, where focus is difficult and distraction occurs frequently.

  • Risky impulsive behavior. Such as buying sprees, risky sexual behavior, poor business decisions or investments, etc.

Depressive Episode

  • Persistent sadness. Feeling sad, down, or hopeless most of the time.

  • Lack of interest. Things that were once engaging hold no pleasure or enjoyment.

  • Sleep changes. Can either be insomnia or sleeping more than normal.

  • Decreased energy. Often reported as feeling tired all the time or having no energy.

  • Lack of concentration. Inability to focus on typical daily life tasks.

  • Suicidal ideation. Thoughts of harming or killing oneself, active suicide attempts, or a plan of how to attempt suicide.

These are only some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder. To learn more about bipolar disorder symptoms, check out this blog post I wrote.

My Approach To Bipolar Disorder Counseling

My goal as a bipolar disorder counselor is to treat your bipolar disorder symptoms based on your own unique experience.

Starting bipolar disorder counseling can be daunting. You likely are ready to find some relief. You are ready to enjoy some stability in your bipolar symptoms so you can live your life how you truly want. You don't want to be controlled by bipolar disorder.

When you work with me as a bipolar disorder counselor, our first step will be to explore your bipolar symptoms. Bipolar disorder has historically been misdiagnosed. Our first goal will be to determine if your experience is consistent with bipolar disorder so that we can know if bipolar treatment will be right for you.

Once we have determined that you are experiencing bipolar disorder and that bipolar disorder therapy is right for you, we will start to focus on how it has affected your life. Much of the benefit of therapy in general, but bipolar therapy as well, is taking the time to look deep into your experiences and come to an understanding about what those experiences mean for you. Then we can work on some skills to cope with bipolar disorder.

Medication and Bipolar Disorder

We live in a time where we have the benefit of medications to help with various issues. Mental health concerns are also benefited by medications specific for those disorders. I often recommend that if someone cannot handle their mental health concerns on their own, utilizing medication as a tool can be extremely helpful.

Bipolar disorder is a unique issue in regards to using medications. Many people with less sever mental health concerns can take medications for a limited time and then cope on their own. However, those experiencing bipolar disorder often have to utilize medications throughout their lives in order to cope fully with their bipolar symptoms.

When I work with people in bipolar disorder counseling, I will likely suggest setting up a consultation with a mental health medication specialist to explore bipolar disorder treatment options through medication, to supplement bipolar disorder counseling.
