Marriage and Couples Counseling

Relationships don't have to be so hard.

Your relationship started out great. Somewhere along the way, that spark was lost.

You love each other. That has been clear from the beginning of your marriage or relationship. As a couple, you've experienced a lot. You want your marriage or relationship to last. You just need some help overcoming your relationship concerns.

Couples counseling can provide you with the therapy you need to make your relationship last.

Marriage and Couples Counseling Can Reignite that Spark

As a couples therapist, I can help you resolve those conflicts holding you back as a couple.

Your relationship was probably easy at the beginning. You never considered you would need couples therapy. You want to feel the way you did at the beginning. You're thinking that maybe a relationship therapist can help.

The good news is, relationship counseling, also known as couples counseling or marriage counseling, can help you overcome the conflicts or challenges your relationship is facing. You don't have to stay the same and neither does your relationship and marriage. Marriage therapy is the next step to having the relationship you want.

As a marriage and couples therapist, I enjoy working with couples to explore ways they can improve their relationships and continue to excel in the areas they already do. Marriage and family counseling provides a space where even a high conflict couple can learn to make things work.

How To Know If You Need Couples Therapy

There are many reasons for couples to need marriage and couples counseling.

Couples therapy

As a marriage and couples counselor, I have seen couples come in for therapy for many different concerns. Everyone relationship is unique, so it is no surprise that the need for marriage therapy can look different in different couples. As I have provided couples therapy there are some common relationship concerns I have seen in couples counseling sessions. Here are some of the common marriage and couple relationship concerns I have seen in couples counseling.

  • Poor Communication. I feel like a broken record writing this. This is the number one conflict that walks into my couples counseling office. There are four communication styles you should watch out for. Check them out below.

  • Boundary Setting. Hand in hand with communication is setting healthy boundaries. Couples who struggle with boundaries end up needing couples counseling.

  • Trust. This conflict can appear in different ways. Breaking promises, lack of follow through, infidelity, and even pornography use all land in this category. Couples who struggle with trust end up in couples counseling.

These are only some of the problems that lead to needing couples counseling. To learn more about reasons to start couples therapy, check out this blog post I wrote.

4 Communication Problems

Dr. John Gottman emphasizes what he calls "the four horsemen of the apocalypse" regarding communication. These are four ways of communicating that can indicate a relationship will end.

  1. Criticism - when one member of a couple attacks the character of the other.

  2. Contempt - when one or both members are down right mean to the other.

  3. Defensiveness - in response to criticism, excuses and playing the victim is used to avoid responsibility.

  4. Stonewalling - this is another way of saying shutting down or just not engaging anymore.

These aren't the only ways to communicate poorly. These also don't necessarily mean a relationship will end as long as things change. To learn more about the Gottman's philosophy regarding communication, check out this webpage

What Marriage and Couples Counseling is like with Me

My goal as a marriage and couples counselor is to be the top marriage therapist and couples therapist in Pocatello. To do this, I am committed to helping couples improve their relationships through couples therapy.

You are ready for your relationship to get back on track with couples counseling. Whether you're looking for marriage therapy or couples therapy, taking that step will bring you that much closer to enjoying the relationship you deserve.

As a marriage and couples therapist I start marriage therapy or couples therapy with a session of getting to know your relationship's background. We explore in this couples counseling session what each of you think and feel about the identified problems.

The next step in the marriage and couples counseling process is to look at the "why." We work as a team to identify what the root causes for the relationship discord are. My role as the couples counselor is to provide an objective perspective on what is shared and on what takes place in marriage therapy and couples therapy sessions. Then we can start to implement skills in our couples counseling sessions.
